Musicians rally together to save Hackney’s MOTH Club

A planning application has been submitted to build residential flats directly next to Hackney’s MOTH club, one of London’s most beloved music venues.

With balconies overlooking the stage wall and smoking area, if approved, this could threaten the venue’s ability to operate in the long run due to inevitable noise complaints from residents and further licensing restrictions.

MOTH Club has been central to London’s grassroots music scene for years, a place where emerging artists cut their teeth, and countless memorable shows have taken place. It’s also a cornerstone for the cultural ecosystem that publications have helped champion and preserve.

“Black Country, New Road played their first ever show at Moth Club (for better or worse),” said the band. “We, alongside innumerable other musicians, comedians, performers and punters not only love MOTH Club, we rely on it. It is a vital part of London’s cultural landscape. Without MOTH Club, as well as countless other independent venues under threat of predatory developers, London risks losing its vibrant, essential cultural heart.”

The venue has launched a petition opposing the development, hitting a new milestone of 25,000 signatures. You can sign the petition - here.

“We’ve been blown away by the outpouring of support from across the music industry,” said a spokesperson from MOTH Club. “From artists, venues, promoters, festivals and fans, standing together to protect one of London’s most vital independent spaces. We will be launching a series of gigs in support of the cause. Keep your eyes peeled for more information.”
