Areal launches SR1 immersive monitoring headphone system

Immersive audio specialist Areal has launched SR1, a new spatial reference headphone system designed to assist with accurate immersive monitoring beyond the post-production, mixing or broadcast studio environment.

The SR1 is a multi-driver headphone system that combines quad-driver architecture in each earcup with Areal’s Acoustic Image Mapping (AIM) technology. Surround information is physically distributed across dedicated drivers for front, rear and height channels - preserving spatial separation.

SR1 presents a repeatable spatial image across users and sessions, differentiating itself from systems that rely on binaural emulation or Head-Related Transfer Function (HRTF) personalisation.

Processing for SR1 is manoeuvred by an eight-output companion controller with rotary level control and switches for instant toggling between stereo, 5.1 and 7.1.4 formats. The unit doubles as a high-specification headphone amplifier, as well as incorporating a high-resolution 24-bit DAC. The controller connects via USB-C to a Mac or PC, and appears as a class-compliant multichannel soundcard for integration with the user’s preferred software.

“By streamlining workflows and maximising portability, we want to free audio professionals to monitor, reference and create spatial content wherever they choose to work,” said Pieter Doms, Areal co-founder. “With SR1 and your laptop, your setup becomes self-contained. When you return to the studio, your mix is already structured and ready for refinement. This is also a fantastic tool for anyone seeking to develop their immersive mixing skills without the luxury of 24/7 studio access.”

After more than five years of development, SR1 is the second launch from Areal, following the launch of its Upmix Engine hardware at the beginning of the year. The SR1 system is distributed by POLAR in Great Britain, with additional partners to be announced throughout 2026. SR1 is also available in selected territories on their website.
